The 2G and 3G UK mobile networks will be switched off long before the government’s 2033 deadline.  In some areas the switch off has already taken place.  Telecoms regulator Ofcom says turning off 2G and 3G will free up capacity, or spectrum,  that can be used to expand 4G and 5G which should help tackle signal dead spots.

You have probably already upgraded your everyday phone but what about your hidden devices?  Machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications commonly require embedded SIMs in a huge variety of devices.  Do you have any of these…?

  • Smart meters
  • Asset and vehicle trackers
  • Alarms, security and gate systems
  • Lift call systems
  • Payment (POS) terminals
  • Vending machines and kiosks
  • Industrial plant monitoring
  • Health monitoring and telemetry units
  • Automotive systems
  • Smart home appliances (boilers, air conditioners, white goods and even robotic lawnmowers!)

If you do, the 2G and 3G switch off could disable your device if the SIM has not been upgraded!

We would suggest you check your device vendor before it is too late.  Should you require a SIM upgrade Horizone is on hand to supply 4G and 5G SIMs from all the major networks.
