For over 40 years the Cirdan Sailing Trust, based at Bradwell Waterside in Essex, has offered sail training experiences to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Typically groups of youngsters, together with their group leaders, spend a week aboard one of Cirdan’s three boats.
The challenge and discipline of a sea going adventure allows the sail trainees to learn about themselves, develop an acceptance of others, develop a willingness to take controlled risks, discover hidden strengths which helps address behavioural difficulties and appreciate the value of working as a team. Even neurodiverse trainees and those with learning difficulties find themselves involved with all aspects of running the vessel 24/7 including helming, sail handling, navigation and domestic duties such as cooking and cleaning.
Operating around the entire UK coastline, Cirdan Sailing Trust’s fleet comprises of 73 foot ketch Faramir built in 1981, 104 foot Baltic Trader Queen Galadriel built in 1937 and 71 foot gaff yawl Duet built in 1912. On each trip the youth group leaders work alongside the boat’s professional crew.
The Cirdan Sailing Trust also work with people recovering from psychosis. The annual Voyage to Recovery is a unique therapeutic sailing adventure harnessing the power of sailing to promote teamwork, resilience, and personal growth all while exploring the open sea. Faramir and her crew circumnavigate the UK with different NHS Early Intervention in Psychosis teams from across the country supporting them on different legs of the voyage. The project takes people away from a clinical setting and immerses them into a whole new environment in the great outdoors.
